Cardinia Lakes EnviroDevelopment accreditation

Cardinia Lakes has been awarded EnviroDevelopment accreditation by the Urban Development Institute of Australia (UDIA) in the categories of Ecosystems and Community – and becomes one of three Peet Victorian communities to be recognised in this way.

Cardinia Lakes now joins Quarters in Cranbourne West and Aston in Craigieburn as an industry-leading, sustainable community.

EnviroDevelopment is an environmental assessment scheme, designed and administered by the UDIA to inspire and increase socially responsible development throughout Victoria.

Cardinia Lakes has successfully achieved accreditation in two out of a possible six categories;

Ecosystems – protected and enhanced health and sustainability of natural systems and the encouragement of native biodiversity and rehabilitation of degraded sites.

Community – vibrant, cohesive, sustainable communities with good community design; the provision of community facilities and networks; safe, accessible housing and options for the reduced use of private motor vehicles.

The ten-year environmental program underway at Cardinia Lakes was fundamental to the community receiving accreditation in the Ecosystems category. The successful initiative has encouraged native fauna and flora back to the community, creating a natural habitat for Cardinia Lakes’ residents and the wider Pakenham community to enjoy.

Only six residential communities in Victoria have received EnviroDevelopment accreditation from the UDIA since the program’s launch in March 2010 – three of these are Peet communities.

Cardinia Lakes Family Fun Day

04 Oct 2011

Family matters at Cardinia Lakes!

Little Matilda-Rose Caldwell is the fourth generation of one family to live at Peet Limited’s Cardinia Lakes community in Pakenham – a fact that made her recent safe arrival an even more significant event.

Matilda-Rose’s parents, Simon and Kate Caldwell, her uncle Matthew Caldwell, grandmother Deborah Caldwell and great-grandparents Dianne and Neville Flintoff have all made Cardinia Lakes their home.

Proud great-grandmother Dianne said it was wonderful to have everyone living so close to each other.

“As Neville and I have grown older, being near to family is more important than ever. We all live in different parts of the Cardinia Lakes community, but we’re never more than a few minutes away from each other.”

Dianne’s daughter Deborah and her grandson Matthew Caldwell were the first to move to Cardinia Lakes in 2009. Matthew then encouraged Dianne and Neville to make the move, which they did soon after.

The family were later joined by Matthew’s older brother Simon and his wife Kate – the proud parents of little Matilda-Rose.

“Cardinia Lakes is a great spot for us as a family,” said Deborah, “it has that suburban feel with plenty of open space but still retains a lot of character.

“I work in the city so coming home each evening to a more relaxed, peaceful environment is lovely. On balmy evenings, I like to enjoy the tranquility of Cardinia Lakes in my back yard.” explained Deborah.

Indeed, Matilda-Rose may even have more family at Cardinia Lakes in the near future, with Aunty Emma, her husband Memhet Huseyin and little cousin Mikayla currently looking at available land options.

Peet Limited Managing Director and CEO Brendan Gore said the Cardinia Lakes community offers an ideal place for people and families of all ages to set-up home.

“With four generations of the same family choosing Cardinia Lakes, it’s clear that the age-old notions of kinship and community are still a big part of what people look for when creating a home.”

With half of all homesites now sold, Cardinia Lakes is proving to be a popular choice for homeowners looking to combine lakeside living with easy access to Pakenham’s local amenities.

Preliminary construction work on the Cardinia Lakes children’s centre – a Shire of Cardinia initiative – is also now underway. Once complete, the centre will provide occasional child care for children under three years old, kinder to three and four year-olds, maternal and child health services, early childhood intervention and family services.

Cardinia Lakes celebrates the lakes opening in style!

Family fun at CardiniaMore than 200 people from Cardinia Lakes, the surrounding community and their family and friends celebrated the official opening of the $4.9 million, 12-hectare lakes precinct on Saturday, 26 March 2011.

The event provided plenty of opportunity for everyone to explore the magnificent parkland, enjoy free entertainment and get to know one another.

Councillor Collin Ross, representing the Mayor of Cardinia Shire, George Blenkhorn, officially declared the lakes precinct open.

Cardinia Lakes homebuyer Amanda Noblett was announced as the winner of the Name the Lakes competition. Amanda said her entry was inspired by the quarrying history of the lakes.

“I was fascinated by the fact the lakes were once quarries, and that history, together with the stone walls that feature throughout Cardinia Lakes, gave me the idea for my entry,” she said.

“Eastone – my suggested name for the eastern lake - is a simple combination of east and stone,” said Amanda.

Research by the Berwick Pakenham Historical Society confirmed the lakes’ quarrying history, with stone from the quarry used to build many of the area’s roads, particularly during the 1940s.  This heritage is captured in the park overlooking the lakes where large stones are a feature and double as seats.

The proposed name for the western lake - Cook’s Spring - is also inspired by Amanda’s interest in Pakenham’s history, with the smaller lake named in recognition of the previous landowners.

The names will now progress through formal approval and gazettal processes.

Competition entries were reviewed by an expert panel, including Cardinia Shire’s Mayor, Cr George Blenkhorn, Audrey Dodson, Secretary of the Berwick Pakenham Historical Society and Janene Vurlow, Environment & Heritage Planner at the Cardinia Shire Council.

Amanda has won a catered barbeque for 20 people, which she plans to use as a housewarming celebration once construction on her new home at Cardinia Lakes has been completed.

Runners up Matthew Ridgeway and Dianne Wood (both residents at Cardinia Lakes) each received a $100 Coles/Myer gift voucher.

The weekend also proved a winner for local golfers, with the inaugural Cardinia Lakes 3-Ball Tournament held on Saturday at the Pakenham & Districts Golf Club. The new format event is proudly sponsored by Cardinia Lakes, and saw the team of Chris Towns, Rick Alexander and Andrew Villinger take the honours on the day.

Celebrate the Opening of the Lakes Precinct

You’re invited to a free Family Fun Day at Cardinia Lakes in Pakenham on Saturday 26 March 2011!

The free Family Fun Day will kick-off at 11am and run until 2pm at the eastern lake on Windermere Boulevard.  There will be plenty of free entertainment for the whole family, including a roving jazz band, face painting, a jumping castle, sausage sizzle and plenty more.

Peet Limited Managing Director and CEO Brendan Gore said the Family Fun Day provided a great opportunity for the community to be among the first to enjoy the acres of parkland which surround Cardinia Lakes’ two naturally formed lakes.

“Peet has invested close to $5 million to bring the lakes precinct to life, providing residents and visitors to Cardinia Lakes with a really impressive new open space to enjoy,” said Mr Gore.

The opening event will also mark the official naming of the community’s two signature lakes – sending one Cardinia Lakes resident into the history books. The names have been selected from residents and purchasers entries to the Cardinia Lakes Name the Lakes competition.

“We were delighted with the response from the community and received some very interesting suggestions that put our panel of judges to the test,” Mr Gore said.

The entries have been judged by an expert panel, including Cardinia Shire Mayor, Cr George Blenkhorn.

“We look forward to sharing a day of celebration with our judging panel, the winners of the competition, our Cardinia Lakes residents and other members of the local community,” said Mr Gore.

Recycling Reaps Rewards

A Cardinia Lakes resident’s effort to turn a near tragedy into a positive experience has won her a weekend for two at a luxury eco-resort, thanks to Peet Limited’s 2010 National Recycling Week Competition.

Amanda Adshead woke on Valentine’s Day 2010 to the sound of a frightening popping and crackling noise in her house. She soon realised the sound was a fire ripping through the roof and she raced to wake her two young children and get them out of the home before it was too late.

While fire fighters managed to save some of the home, it was not safe to live in and had to be demolished.

But Mrs Adshead could not bear the thought of what had been her family’s home being reduced to rubble and destined for landfill. So she contacted as many people as she could to salvage everything from floorboards and curtains to windows and concrete, so it could be recycled and re-used.

Mrs Adshead’s story was among the winning entries of Peet’s Recycling Week Competition, which asked Peet estate residents and purchasers to describe what they did (or pledged to do) to recycle, reduce and re-use.

The Adsheads moved to Cardinia Lakes after the loss of their home – the fire was caused by an electrical fault - and have continued their recycling efforts.

In addition to having a compost bin, the family also put all of their pets’ droppings into the garden and they collect grey water in tanks and buckets to water their plants. “My theory is if it can’t survive in my garden then it shouldn’t be there,” Mrs Adshead said.

Peet Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Brendan Gore said there were some inspirational entries to the community competition.
“It is fantastic to know that so many of our residents are committed to sustainable living,” Mr Gore said.

“Some of the novel and unique ways in which people in our communities have been working to reduce, re-use and recycle are inspiring.”

Reduce, recycle and WIN!

Thousands of residents and purchasers in Peet communities are being encouraged to support National Recycling Week 2010 which kicks off on Monday 8 November 2010.

You can make your mark by organising a Friday File Fling at home or at the office,  joining in an Aussie Swap Party or by learning more about how to recycle right all year round. Look online at www.recyclingweek.planetark.org to find an event near you and for a raft of other information about environmentally-friendly recycling habits.

Meanwhile, the Peet team across Australia is joining in by participating in the national Friday File Fling on 12 November – recycling paper and other office materials that might otherwise be destined for the bin.

To encourage our residents across Australia to join the recycling rage this November too, residents and purchasers in Peet communities across Western Australia, Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland are being offered the chance to win a luxury weekend away for two at an eco-resort!*

If you’re a resident or purchaser, simply make a recycling pledge or tell us what you already do to recycle at home or in your community, for your chance to win!   Your entry can be as simple or elaborate as you please!

Make sure you email your response, along with your name, address, telephone number and the Peet community in which you live or are building, to community@peet.com.au.

The competition is open to Peet residents and purchasers only and entries must be received by no later than 21 November 2010.

Now in its 15th year, National Recycling Week will run from Monday 8 November to Sunday 14 November 2010.   So take up the challenge and recycle at home, school and work!

Did you know? Household batteries contain toxic metals such as cadmium, mercury and lead, which can be harmful to the environment when disposed of to landfill. Most councils offer regular collections and/or provide drop-off locations for hazardous waste. Search www.recyclingnearyou.com.au  to find collection points in your local area or click here to learn more about Australian rubbish and recycling.

Cardinia Lakes helps Pakenham secure success

More than one hundred spectators witnessed a historical victory at the Pakenham and District Golf Course on Saturday (20 February), with the home team winning the Pakenham Plate for the fourth consecutive year.

The team aggregate event, which attracts players from around the region, was sponsored by Peet Limited’s Cardinia Lakes estate through its Community Sponsorship Program.

Ron Horne, Robert Yates, Gordon Mackenzie and Jim Welsh outplayed a competitive field in windy conditions to take home the 2010 trophy.

Peet Limited Managing Director and CEO, Brendan Gore, said the Company was pleased to actively support the community by sponsoring the Pakenham and District Golf Club.

“Peet is pleased to support the Club to provide recreational facilities to more than 650 community members and to coordinate major events like the Pakenham Plate, which brings together sports people from throughout the region,” Mr Gore said.

“Sporting clubs form an important part of our community fabric and encourage active, healthy living, which Peet also aims to achieve at communities such as Cardinia Lakes.”

Pakenham and District Golf Club Manager, Jason McQualter, said the Club was thrilled to have retained the trophy. “This was our 26th year hosting the Pakenham Plate and we couldn’t be happier with the result!

The support of competitors, the Club’s organising committee and the generous assistance from Cardinia Lakes enabled the Club to deliver another successful event for the season,” Mr McQualter said.
